TRANSLATION SHIFT IN ENGLISH – BAHASA INDONESIA NOVEL TOTTO-CHAN BY DOROTHY BRITTON

 

ABSTRACT

Berlianie (2018). Translation Shift in English – Bahasa Indonesia Novel Totto-chan by Dorothy Britton. Thesis. Jakarta: English Literature Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing (STIBA) – IEC Jakarta.  

This thesis is an attempt to study translation shift. The writer discusses the types of translation shift used and the dominant shift occurred in target text. This thesis applies qualitative content analysis to analyze Novel Totto-chan in both text English as source text and Bahasa Indonesia as target text. The main discussion had to do with Category Shift as the theory of Catfrod (1978); it will be categorized in Structure Shift, Unit Shift, Class-Shift, Intra-system Shift.  And the conclusion, the writer found there are 74 shifts consisting of 8 Structure Shifts, 47 Unit Shifts, 13 Class Shifts, and 6 Intra-system Shifts. There are also 47 Unit Shifts that are most occurred in target text. The writer hopes the translators always refer to the concept when transferring source text into target text.
