THE FORMALISM USED IN THE INTERPRETATION OF THE TWO POEMS, “HAVE YOU GOT A BROOK IN YOUR LITTLE HEART” BY EMILY DICKINSON AND “MY LOVE IS LIKE TO ICE AND I TO FIRE”

This thesis aims to study about the formalism used in the interpretation of the selected poem. Because of the difficulty and the importance in knowing the meaning of the poem, the writer used formalism approach that focuses on the speaker, rhyme, tone, imagery, and figure of speech to help the reader or the student in interpreting the poem and finding the theme of the poem. The objective of this research is to analyze the interpretation of the selected poem and to describe the theme of the selected poem. In this thesis, the writer used qualitative method. The first technique of data analysis is by reading the two selected poems. Second is sorting the data. Third is categorizing.  Next is coding. The fifth is making interpretation. The last is drawing conclusion. The result of this thesis shows that the formalism approach helps the writer in interpreting the poem and finding the main idea of the poem which tells about love. Based on the analysis, the writer hopes that this thesis can provide knowledge about the formalism used in the interpretation of the poem which can lead into the lesson of the poem.
